Background

SHAKTI was originated by a group of young professional people during the year 2003. The objective is to establish a healthy society through social transformation. Since inception the organisation is striving hard to reach before the poorest of the poor with an intention to reduce poverty in the state of Odisha. Over the last years the society is constantly putting its efforts to march ahead to achieve the aim of the organisation. SHAKTI is a socio-economic cultural organisation aiming at the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden keeping an eye over preservation of the environment and observation of ethics of nature and its deep study with all kinds of day-to-day reforms necessary for the present day. The development of SHAKTI into a non-govt. organization has covered a long path. This process may be broadly divided into three phases:

  • Activists oriented (1999 to 2002)
  • Independent phase (2002 till 2003)
  • Towards professional excellence and transparency – 2003 onwards

Management

A general body constitutes SHAKTI, consisting of 12 members. These members sit at least once a year to look after the management system of the organisation. The general body elects a governing body that is accountable to manage the day-to-day affairs of the organisation. They sit once each quarter to take stock of the functioning of the institute. At the same time, the governing body selects a person from among them to work as the Chief Functionary of the organisation. He is authorized to deal with all the legal matters and administration of the society.

Core Objectives

  • Promote welfare and advancement of weaker sections including women, children and tribal people in Orissa
  • Promote universal access to quality health care and primary education
  • Promote popularization of science and technology along with biotechnology-based projects
  • Promote population stabilization measures, water and sanitation
  • Ensure livelihood security for the poor and marginalized through the development of vocational capabilities
  • Take up women development activities-SHGs, vocational training, IG units, and protection from violence as well as gender-based discrimination
  • Popularize watershed management strategies especially in rain-fed and drought-prone areas
  • Motivate beneficiaries for undertaking steps to improve agriculture, horticulture, fishery, and animal resources
  • Motivate people for voluntary action and participation in the development process
  • Conduct disaster preparedness and disaster response activities
  • Undertake action research projects and special studies in diverse fields pertaining to social, economic, and human development
  • Organize workshops, seminars, and advocacy meetings for formulation of appropriate policies and strategies
